Tēnā koe, I'm known as Goldy.

I'm from Aotearoa and I tattoo by hand using a method called handpoke.

Handpoke or stick & poke is an ancient form of traditional tattooing. Applied by hand dot by dot, using just tattoo needles and ink. No machine used at all.

With this technique I don't pierce as deep or as much to tattoo the skin, but can still create solid tattoos. Sometimes a handpoked piece can be preferred for difficult places like the palms, face or fingers. Whether the skin is tough or delicate it can be less traumatic than by machine, and can hurt less. The biggest benefit of this process is how gentle healing can be.

I've had a deep fascination, respect and passion for tattoos from a young age and I am now 17 years deep into my practice. I feel dedicated to handpoke as my craft and grateful to my journey tattooing so far. I did my apprenticeship in the UK around 2009 and have since spent time in studios worldwide, guest spotting and residencies. I came home to Aotearoa in 2012 and I co-opened a successful studio in Wanaka in 2014, that still runs today.

I am now tattooing privately from my peaceful studio nestled in Hāwea Flat, Aotearoa/NZ.
